Spring and summer trends are on everyone’s radar! Yet, this style classic makes a comeback every year. Take it easy with these denim fashion looks!
Spring and summer are right around the corner, so that means it’s time to start recycling your winter apparel, and gearing up for the warm weather! Whether you only needed a light sweater all winter or you’ve had to shovel snow, the time-honored fashion element I’m talking about today can carry you through the entire year. I’m bringing you one of my personal style favorites - good ‘ole denim fashion!
Now you’re probably wondering why I’m so passionate about denim fashion. I grew up in the 90s, so that means we wore a whole lot of denim! My infatuation with denim fashion goes pretty far back, and I’ve managed to maintain a genuine appreciation for this versatile material. It has a distinct appearance that can set the tone for an entire outfit. When I think of denim fashion trends, I like to think of pieces that the everyday person can wear to work, school, running errands, spending time with family and friends - statement pieces that you can use to express your personal style in day-to-day situations.
Distressed Done Right
Shreds of fabric, patches, and tasteful hints of skin - distressed denim fashion has a rugged look that is all its own! A little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n roll, this fashion favorite tends to make a huge impact on the more casual wardrobe choices. If you can rock it, definitely wear it! I have always adored this option when it comes to days out of the office. I find this denim style works well if you’re intentionally not going for a polished look. You don’t have to earn this weathered look by working outside doing hard, manual labor either! You can find distressed jeans in nearly any retail store and at prices that fit all budgets. Sometimes it’s nice to embrace the wear and tear of life, without actually getting dirty!
Tip: I have one rule for distressed jeans - keep it casual! It’s one of my go-to pieces when I want to dress down an outfit without taking away from the overall look.

I can’t get over this weathered denim skirt! Paired with a simple, black leather belt and white shirt, it seems too good to be true. This is the kind of outfit that gives you the style freedom to accessorize with a wide array of pieces, from top to bottom. It’s easy to dress it up with some jewelry or maybe a chic hat. You can go with your favorite pair of heels, some delicate sandals, or maybe even retro sneakers.

If you’re a fan of wearing shorts like I am, this look will have you ready to shop ‘til you drop! The trick with denim shorts, like any fashion element, is to keep it balanced and tasteful. A little can really go a long way when it comes to personal style. These denim shorts are perfectly paired with knee-high boots and a loose-fitting shirt.
Talk about attitude! I couldn’t leave out this example of one of my favorite distressed pieces - THE denim jacket. The beauty of a piece like this is that it’s something you likely won’t wear all day, every day, especially during the warmer months. As the temperature drops toward the end of a long day, it’s one of those gems that you throw on to take your look from daytime to nighttime.
Keep It Dark & Classy
When it comes to denim fashion, the darker the fabric, the easier it is to dress up an outfit. It’s kind of like how black and brown are everyone’s safety colors when it comes to office apparel. Now, don’t get me wrong, office fashion has come a long way. Dark denim jeans, specifically, dark denim without any wear and tear, tends to be the best option to mix and match with more professional pieces! I’ve seen numerous people wear a dark wash jean to their office without any trouble.

For example, these dark flared high waist jeans almost look like dress slacks. Flare jeans have a professional cut and the color is dark with no evidence of wear and tear. Yet, paired with this comfy gray tee, one could easily slip on a nice blazer and head to work!

Check out those pants! Now, these pants could have easily been worn with a simple white blouse. Instead, the contrast of the dark denim button-up with that lively print is absolutely jaw-dropping. Seriously, I can’t believe how brilliant the styling is. The denim shirt keeps the outfit from feeling too formal and serious!
You can make a style statement in lighter shades of denim as well! Don’t be afraid to venture out into the denim spectrum and try as many styles and colors as you like. There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to denim jeans. Personally, I have been guilty of sticking with a dark wash for too long because I knew how to wear it really well. But one day I tried on a pair of light wash denim jeans, and I can honestly say now they’re the first pair I pick every time!
Light washes are like the middle ground between casual, distressed jeans and dark wash denim. They really are the best of both worlds! You get the light airy feel without the seriousness of a dark wash.
These high waisted jeans are casually cuffed at the ankle. It’s a chic way to balance those black pumps and dressy white blouse!

This outfit easily makes my top three! Who would’ve ever thought that white denim overalls and black strappy heels would look so fab? It’s so effortlessly cool!
This Ones for the Fellas
Gentlemen, when it comes to textures and washes, all of these tips and tricks apply to you as well! Whether it’s dark wash jeans paired with a sport’s coat, or your favorite T-shirt styled with cuffed jeans, embrace all that denim fashion has to offer. You’ll be surprised how many times you can recycle the same few shirts when mixed and matched with a few different pairs of men’s jeans!
I really hope you share my appreciation for denim and blue jeans, and I hope you were able to gain some insight on new ways to wear your own favorites. Remember to have fun with it and stay true to your own personal style! Please share with any fellow denim fashion lovers and comment if you’d like to share your own ideas!
