Why throw away your junk when you can make art from it? Artist Renaud Delorme does just that with his found object art portraits!

Everyone has old junk. But I’m guessing your old stuff ends up piled in your attic or in the trash. French artist Renaud Delorme doesn’t think it’s trash. Delorme creates amazing Pop Art portraits from found objects. All sorts of items can be found in his artwork; everything from computer chips, bottle caps, popsicle sticks, and fabric to tennis balls and disposable cameras.

Like many other Pop Art artists, many of Delorme’s portraits are of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Angelina Jolie. However, the way he creates his portraits is what makes his art unique. These unconventional materials combine for an almost mosaic-like graphic representation of his subjects.

Every time I look at one of Delorme’s works, I find something new. For example, part of Clint Eastwood’s face is made of keyboards! I didn’t see that until probably the fifth time I examined this portrait.

Creating art with found objects is amazing. Similar to paper sculptures, creating art from junk is no easy feat. In one of my undergrad classes, we had to create a model of a made-up invention from found materials. My classmates and I were scrounging around looking for pieces we could use from junk yards, thrift shops, friend’s garages, and our own junk. Let me tell you, that was no easy project. It has given me a profound appreciation for found object art.

Creating found object art is not for everyone. I know from experience that it can be difficult to find the right items for your artwork. Clearly it isn't for Delorme. He appears to be such a great collector - he has incorporated so many found objects into his art that I would’ve never thought to use. Old batteries? Toy soldiers? In a portrait? Yeah, I definitely would never have thought of using things like that. But that’s why Delorme is the artist and not me!
