Can’t get enough of that 90s classic Friends? Check out this blog post about modern day clothing that is inspired by Friends fashion!
"...I'll be there for you..."
This begins my second installment of the series “Fashion Inspired by Our Favorite TV Shows.” I am so pumped for this blog post because I am currently on season 10 of Friends, and I don’t want it to end! As you may have noticed, 1990s fashion trends are currently making a comeback. So what better time to post something about Friends fashion (and all the other amazing 90s clothes, 90s dresses, and other 90s wear) than now?!
When I first started watching Friends, I didn’t really like the pilot episode. So, I didn’t continue after that; but so many of my friends (haha) told me how amazing the show was. After all, it is an icon of the 1990s/early 2000s. I decided to give it another try, and I am so happy that I did! I’m sad that I’m almost finished with the series (like I previously mentioned), but watching all those seasons of Friends (and loving every episode) is the reason I decided to write about Friends fashion for this second installment. Anyway, for this post I am going to focus on the three female characters: Rachel Green, Monica Geller, and Phoebe Buffay.
In my opinion, Rachel is the most fashionable (which makes sense because she works for Ralph Lauren, and fashion is her life). We all know about her love for plaid, but that isn’t what I want to address (even though that is very popular right now). Rachel (especially in the earlier seasons) wore a lot of denim. She is the epitome of 90s fashion and wore items like denim vests, skirts, overalls, you name it! In this picture, she is wearing a denim blouse. So I looked for a contemporary outfit that mimicked hers, and found one that Olivia Palermo wore! In fact, she is wearing denim on denim (flashback to 2001 Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake anyone?!), which is in style now. Denim on denim is no longer a fashion faux pas, and I’m sure if Rachel Green could see today’s fashion and how 90s style clothing is making a comeback, she’d be stoked!
Monica Geller has always been the “mom” of the group. She loves cleaning, organizing, and being in charge. Her apartment is where the gang hangs out. She cooks the best food. No surprise here that her fashion represents her personality. My favorite 90s trend of hers (that is also making a HUGE comeback!) is her constant use of mom jeans. Now, I know Rachel used to wear this popular 90s jean style, but not like Monica. Monica was always about clothes that were both practical and fashionable (minus the time she bought those really expensive boots that hurt her feet to the point where she couldn’t walk anymore). Check out Kendall Jenner wearing mom jeans with a chic and modern update. Mom jeans and nineties fashion are back in style, y’all!
We all know that the Miss Phoebe Buffay has the most eclectic fashion of the group. She’s known for her hippie-chic style and long flowy dresses, and her style shows the fun side of 90s fashion trends. Well, Phoebe would occasionally wear something that I am starting to see more and more frequently now in my college town. Do you know what I’m talking about? Probably not because I gave you zero clues. Anyway - y’all know how Phoebe used to wear chokers? I see them everywhere now. I’m actually guilty myself - I have two of them. Nowadays, I usually only see black chokers, but I’ve seen colored ones, too (which Phoebe would love!). It’s incredible how much 90s style is making a comeback!

Check out this black wrap choker that you can find at Wet Seal. It’s similar to what Phoebe used to wear! If you don’t want to spend a lot, just tie a black shoelace around your neck similar to how Phoebe wears her choker! #FashionOnABudget
If you’ve finished the series, please don’t ruin the ending for me! I’ve got about 10 episodes left and I want no spoilers. After checking out these Friends fashion trends, do you see what I’m talking about? My mom always told me how the 1990s were a fun and crazy time, and I can see that just by the fun 90s outfits and 90s clothing style!
Are you fashionista Rachel Green, mommy Monica Geller, or hippie Phoebe Buffay? Make sure you show this post to your friends so that y’all can decide who is who! Don’t forget to comment and let me know your opinion on 90s attire!
*** Since I’ve written this blog, I’ve finished the series. So, share what you thought of both fashion and Friends! ***
