Summer is officially here!! It’s time to break out the sunscreen and crank up the AC. Despite the high temperatures and the propensity to sweat every time I step outside for two seconds, I love summer. Summer means baseball, BBQs, and good times with my friends. It also means it’s almost time for one of my favorite holidays: the Fourth of July.
Growing up, my neighborhood had an annual Fourth of July parade. Every kid in the neighborhood put on some kind of costume or decorated their bike with all sorts of over-the-top patriotic decorations to ride in the parade. And there were prizes! One year I went as the Statue of Liberty and won 1st place for most patriotic! What kid doesn’t love to get a trophy?! Those were good times. Ever since then, I’ve loved patriotic decorations. And, since it’s summer, it’s time to update your seasonal decor. Whether it’s for Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day, patriotic decor is always a good choice!
The DIY star garland (above) is really simple! All you need is a few sheets of red, white, and blue paper, scissors (or a star punch), some thread, and a sewing machine! Cut out all the stars, and then run them through the sewing machine to attach them to one another. Tada! A quick and easy patriotic garland. You can even use the star garland as a table runner! Nothing better than some simple patriotic table decorations.
This porch swing is a perfect example of cheaply and easily adding patriotic flair to your decor. If you have a porch swing (or any piece of furniture) that’s white, all you need to do is add a few pillows. With the addition of the red and white striped pillows and the throw pillow with stars, the swing becomes instantly patriotic! How simple!

Mason jars are in right now. Don’t even pretend that you don’t have a case of them at home just waiting to be made over! Bust out some of those jars and coat them with some paint! The best part? They don’t have to be just vases! Your mason jars can also hold utensils at your 4th of July party, pencils on your desk, or your spare change!
Don’t like the paint route on the mason jars? Try an even simpler version: just tie some ribbon around ‘em. With a few pieces of burlap and ribbon these mason jars are perfectly patriotic! And affordable, too! This version can also be used as candle holders since they’re not completely opaque.
Every home has glassware that you just don’t know what to do with. It’s beautiful, but not always useful. Well, it’s time to make some use of it. Grab some of your glass jars and fill them with anything red, white, and blue! It can even be candy! Or yarn! Even buttons! Whatever you can find. If you use glassware you already have and filler from around your home, these patriotic decorations are practically free! All you have to do is spend a little time to put it all together.
Burlap wreaths seem to be all the rage recently. Most of the time, they seem very overdone and busy to me. However, I love the simplicity of this wreath. Because the wreath itself is made entirely of standard burlap, it allows the patriotic bow to be the main focus.
What makes this wreath even better is you really never have to change it. Patriotic wreaths are always in style. Nevertheless, if you do want to change your wreath, all you need to do is change the bow! With that one quick and inexpensive change, you have a whole new wreath!
I have to admit that I’ve been eyeing the original Lighted Burlap Garland project for a long time. Ever since I first saw it, I’ve wanted to do it. I've just never found the time. And now, Jill at Create Craft Love is at it again with this Denim and Burlap Lighted Garland DIY. I have to say, I think I might love it even more than the original! String lights aren’t just for Christmas anymore! These patriotic lights would make a great addition to anyone’s 4th of July decorations.
Chalkboards make for great DIY projects! With an old frame, some chalkboard paint, and a little bit of time, this versatile decor can be yours! Like the patriotic wall decor above, you can draw out your favorite patriotic phrases. But more than that, with a little creativity, it’s wall decor that can work for any time of year. During a regular week, your chalkboard can give you a little confidence by writing inspirational phrases like “You’ve got this!” or it can be your weekly to-do list. It’s all up to you!
