We all wish for pearly whites, but it’s hard when you want a cup of joe or vino now and again. Smile pretty with these DIY teeth whitening tips!
If you’ve been blessed with beautiful, bright white teeth, I say smile your head off! As the old saying goes, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!” I’d like to think that my own little chompers are fairly bright. However, I’ve begun to notice that as my rigorous schedule gets back into full swing, my daily intake of a good ol’ cup o’ joe begins to increase tremendously. That being said, it’s a recurring thought in my mind when I’m caffeinating that my poor teeth are getting stained with every (very, very important and essential) sip I take!
Growing up, I served my time wearing braces and getting to pick all sorts of cool rubber band colors for my brackets. I’ve been there and done that. Now that I have nice, straight teeth, I try to put all that money spent to good use by keeping them as healthy and white as possible. For that reason, I’ve really been digging different teeth whitening options. I’ve been looking into it more and more—what is the best way to whiten your teeth? The most natural teeth whitening remedy? The most affordable?
I’ve compiled a pretty hefty list of at home teeth whitening tips and tricks that can totally up your beauty game. I felt like keeping these tips to myself would be SO selfish! Plus, if I found great ways to keep your teeth white, I have to share them with you guys, too! So today, friends, we’re gonna explore how to make our ‘stamping white horses’ (big props to all you readers who get that reference) shine bright and pretty!
For starters, the most obvious way you can whiten your teeth at home is to use one (or more) of the teeth whitening products that you can find at your local drug store. When it comes to at home teeth whitening products, the dental industry seems to have TONs of options. From whitening toothpastes and teeth whitening strips, to whitening markers/pens and even at home teeth whitening electronic lights—there’s pretty much something for everyone. Below are 7 out of many (maybe 5 bajillion or so) products that are available to help whiten your teeth.
If you’re wondering what I use personally, I’ve just recently started to use whitening strips (Crest Whitening Strips specifically) and a whitening toothpaste. That’s what I’m using currently, but I’ve tried tons of different teeth whitening products from natural whiteners to standard drug store varieties.
Buuuut, if you’re a newbie to the various teeth whitening methods and you’re prone to teeth sensitivity, I suggest you try a natural and holistic route to whitening. They’re a little kinder to your teeth, and really can help with those sensitive little chompers of yours. There are a lot of natural teeth whitening options, but two that I favor and have heard the best reviews on are oil pulling and black charcoal.
Holy Holistic! Those are some shiny teeth!
1) Oil pulling: "Oil pulling or oil swishing is a folk remedy where oil is 'swished' (kavala graha) or 'held' (snigda gandoosha) in the mouth."
When it comes to whitening your teeth the natural way, oil pulling is by far one of my favorite methods. I still do this from time to time but I haven’t been quite into the habit of doing it lately like I used to. Now just a heads up for those of you who have never tried oil pulling before, but are interested in it, it definitely feels weird at first. I mean, come on, swishing around oil (FYI: coconut oil is my fave) in your mouth for 15-20 minutes doesn’t sound like the most pleasant thing. In all honesty, it is awkward to do at first but once you get used to it, you’ll be so glad you got into the habit of doing it. Why? Because oil pulling has so many benefits!
That’s right! Oil pulling is so awesome for you! I know it’s kind of hard to believe that just swishing oil around in your mouth can have such astounding benefits, but it’s true, oil pulling does it all! If you’re going to try oil pulling, I definitely suggest coconut oil because the taste is the most favorable in comparison to other oils. And, if you want to add a little extra minty zest, add a drop of peppermint oil. Pro tip: if you use coconut oil, don’t spit it down the drain. It can solidify at 75 degrees Fahrenheit and you don’t want it clogging up your drains
2) Activated charcoal teeth whitening

Here’s a homemade teeth whitening remedy you might like! Activated charcoal is totally bomb for whitening your teeth and giving you a brighter smile. It’ll make your smile look gross for a bit, but with a quick rinse you’ll go from black zombie teeth to pearly white pageant smiles. Activated charcoal is a great staple to have for your beauty product routine because it makes for awesome face masks as well!
Fake it 'til you make it! Makeup tips to brighten that smile!
Makeup can guise zits, sleepy eyes, and yes, even yellow teeth! Yup, that’s right! Let’s play out a scenario, friends. Say you’ve been downing those cups of coffee like no tomorrow and have been indulging in a glass of red wine once in a while. You’re probably shaking your head because you’ve got a family photoshoot coming up soon and your smile isn’t as white and bright as it used to be. Not to worry! Here's a quick and easy makeup fix!
Did you know that both red lipsticks with blue tones and plum lipsticks help make your teeth look whiter because the blue undertones help reduce the yellow and orange tones in your skin and teeth? That’s why most Crest commercials for white teeth have people wearing some shade of lipstick that has a blue undertone. Isn’t that fascinating? Who knew!?!

Second very important quick fix, avoid wearing gold lipstick. The reason is because gold lipsticks and glosses can actually accentuate the yellow in your teeth! Yikes! We don’t want to do that do we? Unless your teeth are super white, stick with other lipstick colors for your own sake. With that knowledge, I bid you adieu, friends! I hope these DIY teeth whitening tips and tricks inspired you to smile just a bit more!
