With the rise of technology, it’s hard to imagine life without it. If you love your tech, why not use it within your home? We have great smart home features for you!
Hello, lovely readers! Today is going to be an interesting topic for me. Now, we all know that I love anything that can help you be eco-friendly, and one of the best ways to do that is to utilize smart home technology. I am not a techie. Don’t get me wrong, I love technology, especially tech that makes life easier for me. However, I am actually horrible when it comes to understanding and using technology. The Best Buy guys usually start laughing at me when I have to buy a new laptop because they start talking about RAM and SSD and other acronyms and I just smile and nod because I don’t know what any of that means or what it does. So, on that note, I’m going to do my best to share some awesome smart home features that will help you and your home be more eco-friendly. This has been a lot of research, but I am excited to learn and teach you guys about these great smart home gadgets that will not only help the environment, but save you some much-needed money in the process. Let’s get techie, guys!
Smart Light Bulbs: I am a sucker for good lighting, whether it’s a cool or unusual lamp, or just some great natural lighting. Natural lighting is great because it’s free, but sometimes we want cool lighting that can’t be done by the sun. This is where we get all the awesome lights and lamps that we see today. But, light bulbs can be boring, and jack up your electricity bill. That’s where smart home lighting and smart bulbs come in. There are lots of different ones out there, but these caught my eye because they can change colors. Hello, talk about being able to make your lighting however you want! I am all about that life, and I may be saving up to get some of these fantastic bulbs. They cost more up front, but they will save you money in the long run because of how energy efficient they are, and they look cool to boot!

Programmable Thermostat: As someone who lives in south central Texas, where even in the depths of November we can get temperatures in the upper 90s, having a good thermostat is key. The last few weeks have been so crazy weather wise that having an awesome programmable smart thermostat would have been amazing! I kid you not it went from being in the 90s one morning to dropping to the upper 60s, where it stayed for a few days. The temperatures were hovering in the 50s to 60s during the day, and the 30s at night. Fall at last. But, that’s Texas. It could literally be 95 tomorrow and 60 the day after.
This particular Nest smart home thermostat is perfect to program, and it actually has been proven to save you money on your electric bill. When the weather in your area goes from winter to summer in a single day, having a good programmable thermostat, where you can actually set times and temperatures for many times throughout the day, is something you almost can’t do without. Money well spent, in my opinion! This one is definitely on my list to buy.

Doorbell Camera: I think this is such a great idea, especially for people who don’t have someone who stays at the house a lot. You would know whenever you have packages delivered, and you would always know who is at your door. As a young female who has mostly lived alone, I would have loved to have been able to see who was outside easier than just using the peephole (which when you are 5’ tall, is very hard to see through). Even though I don’t live alone now, I still love this gadget. There are many different ones out on the market, and they all look kind of awesome. I love the ones where you can get the images of those ringing your doorbell sent straight to your phone or tablet. It would make getting deliveries so much easier!
Smart Apps: Did you know you can set up your home so you can set your lights and air conditioning/heater from a tablet or smart phone? Man, technology can be so awesome. It kind of reminds me of this commercial I saw the other day where this man was walking by a house and no one was home but the lights were flickering like it was haunted. Turns out the baby had the parent’s smart phone and was playing with the app! Too funny, yet it shows how easy smart house devices are to use.
I kind of want that so I can set my AC. That would be great for Texas! You know how I mentioned the weather shift earlier? Yeah, if I had one of these, I could have changed my AC from where I was having lunch that day. There are so many apps out there, I couldn’t just pick one to talk about. They’re all different depending on what you want and the products you already own. For instance, Nest, who owns the awesome thermostat I mentioned earlier, has tons of other gadgets that can be programmed remotely with their free app. There are many others too, like Kasa, Stringify, and too many to list in one post. If you’re interested in programming your house from your phone, I would definitely check out this write up here that goes over the pros and cons of the 50 best smart house apps. It’s a good article, and if you’re serious about adding this tech to your smart home, you should definitely read it.
That’s it for today, folks! I hope you loved this techie post! Which smart home devices do you want? I kind of like all the smart heating/cooling and light features, so I can easily set my house to be as energy efficient as possible.
